Tales From Earthsea (Gedo Senki)
"A very ambitious movie by Goro Miyazaki"-bezoe
Something bizarre has come over the land. The kingdom is deteriorating. People are beginning to act strange... What's even more strange is that people are beginning to see dragons, which shouldn't enter the world of humans. Due to all these bizarre events, Ged, a wandering wizard, is investigating the cause. During his journey, he meets Prince Arren, a young distraught teenage boy. While Arren may look like a shy young teen, he has a severe dark side, which grants him strength, hatred, ruthlessness and has no mercy, especially when it comes to protecting Teru. For the witch Kumo this is a perfect opportunity. She can use the boy's "fears" against the very one who would help him, Ged. (Animenewsnetwork.com)
This is a first movie by Goro Miyazaki, who is a son from Hayao Miyazaki. I must say this is a very ambitious movie and he achieved it pretty good actually.
First thing I noticed was the background painting, it was gorgeous! But unfortunately I will say the animation was not that fluent, its didn't feel like a movie quality rather than an anime series quality. Character design was really Ghibli style I must say, and I love it.
BGM was awesome btw, some of the scene actually feels very dramatic with the BGM. And the ending music, It was calming yet enjoyable.
There is one important thing actually that I don't like in this movie, that thing is the storyline. The story it self should be really interesting, however the way that Goro did the movie fail to express the story into its fullness.Since I feel that Tales From Earthsea should be an anime that fall into a "bit" serious type (not as intense as Graves of Flies, but at least maybe like Mononoke~). And unfortunately I don't feel the intensity in the movie. Plus the ending I felt it pretty weak.
But as a directorial debut, Goro's Tales From Earthsea has setting a pretty high standard for his anime style. I'm looking foward to see his next project.
